A few days ago I was reading some stuff about David Harding, Glenrothes' first town artist and Malcolm Robertson who followed him, and wondered if there was a location map for all the public art in the town. So, I emailed the council to see if they had a guide, and Andy Neil who works for the arts and theatres trust Fife got back to me saying there wasn't really a map, but there's a fairly old brochure with a list of the addresses and names and that he'd photocopy it and send it over. So thanks to Andy, I now have a list of the names of the sculptures and murals and also the streets in Glenrothes where they are. There are 144 in the list! Anyway - I'm going to have to type that list up so I can get it online, which might take me a couple of days... and then, I was hoping that everybody who reads this site (and me!) could look at it and go and take a picture of whichever work on the list they can. As we collect them, I'll cross them off the list and I'll add them to Google Maps and Google Earth, so anybody with internet access will be able to see the locations on the map, and then click on each one for a picture. I'll try and get the list online over the next couple of days - and work out the details of getting the pictures tied to google maps, although this: http://www.panoramio.com looks quite promising. might try and create a collection at microsoft live maps too since they have higher definition pics of Glenrothes.
Who's up for it?

cheers! McWesty has emailed me a bunch already too, and there are a few on a cd-rom Andy sent me, so we should get off to a decent start. Still typing up the list though!

Right, here's the list. As we progress I'll change the text colour of every work that we have a picture of to green so everybody knows what we've got and what we still need... I'll update the list as soon as I get the pictures I've already got online (and figure out which ones they are ) There are some grainy black and white reference pics on the list Andy sent me, so if there's any doubt about which sculpture is which I'll use that, but there's no point in me scanning them all in as it'll take forever.
You can see the photos that are online so far, in their locations at: http://www.panoramio.com/user/2327189 although I'm starting to think that ultimately we should use the microsoft map as the quality difference is like night and day...

If you need a hand with creating a custom google map with the pictures then I can be of some assistance. Earlier this year for my honours project I created a remote GPS tracking system that used google maps to follow the position of a car so know the ins and outs of all the coding.

nice! maybe a custom map is the way to go then? I'm not sure if inclusion on panoramia means a default listing on google earth and it'd be useful to just have what we want on the map so it doesn't get mixed in with photos of peoples cats and stuff... I'll use panoramia as the host for the photos anyway as it'll let me tag their locations and once they're all online, would hosting them there be a problem for a custom map? and is there anything else we'd need to do? Cheers!

Also - McWesty just sent me scans of an old Glenrothes Art Guide with locations - I've put them in order over on this page. Should be useful.

The way i would approach it would simply create a klm file (Googles keyhole markup language) its an xml file that you could group information regarding an item eg:
Latitude / Longitude Description URL of image
The KML file can be used on Google Earth and online with Google Maps. I personally store my images on flickr. I geotag most of my images (adds latitude / longitude to exif data) which can be read by a simple script or using flickrs API.

right, after a wee break to wet a friend's baby's head in Glasgow on Friday, followed by a visit to Hampden on Saturday where I had a front row view of the miss of the year, I've got all the photos I currently have uploaded and mapped on the panoramia site.
If it's not green in the list above, we don't have a picture of it yet...so it's time to start collecting! If you have, or can get a picture of any of them which you don't mind us using, please either upload it to somewhere like flickr or photobucket and let us know where it is, or email it over to glenrothesspoon@gmail.com and I'll add it on. They need to be over 500 pixels in either width or length for Google to automatically add them when I put them on - if that doesn't make any sense, just send them anyway!
I'll do my best to get some too when I get the chance - and I might email the gazette and see if they'll give the project a wee mention too... Cheers, Mark

I've been a bit busy lately and haven't emailed the gazette yet, but I did get a reply from an email I sent to David Harding to let him know about this project which I'm sure he won't mind me copying below:
Dear mark
how very interesting and such a great idea.
I gave a talk at St Paul's church last year as part of the 60th anniversary. It wasn't well publicised but I thoroughly enjoyed doing it, meeting many old friends and making some new ones. I heard that the ramblers club were planning a number of mapped walks around the art works. I had a visit prior to that at the invitation of Andy when we went round as many sites as we could. And then a couple of years before that the Rotary Club made a film of the town with a little bit of me discussing some of the works. I say all this as it, along with your proposals, indicate an interest in the works 30/40 years after they were made.
I got all my slides put on to disc recently but of course digitisation only showed how badly they had deteriorated. Over the years they must have been in and out of a hundred or more projectors all over the world. Going back on those recent visits showed how much the works had become embedded in their contexts, with the trees and shrubs all grown up around them. originally of course the places were very bare. I took a few new shots with my little digital camera.
I'll help you in any way I can. In the meantime I've attached a couple of things that may be helpful.
By the way what's your special interest/or what is Glenrothesspoon?
best wishes
david
 thanks David!
I'll try and get some more pictures taken this weekend, and write to the gazette too - I think the main thing to concentrate on at the moment is just getting pictures of everything on the list online. Once that's done and they're geotagged we'll look at the best way of presenting them and maybe we can get David to comment on some of them once we've finished that stage... Might take a while, but this was never going to get done overnight!
I'm also starting to think that I might set it up in a site of its own - or at least a page of its own with some background information too... may need some help there...Ross? bubz?

No probs I'd quite enjoy making up a site that has some useful and interesting content on it. I've done a bit with Google maps too so I know the basics.
![[image] [image]](http://www.darkhorizon.plus.com/forums/wardrive.jpg) This is a map of wireless networks I made of Markinch.
How about we give or have our members volunteer to photograph certain areas, I could probably do Stenton since I live right next to it. (the lack of a camera may be an issue but I'm sure St Drostan can lend me his!).
