You have to bear in mind that it's only a proposal. Even so it still hasn't been officially put forward to the residents of the town. It was only found out about from a 'leaked document'. They should be asking US first.

The most important folk are the ordinary people who use the insty on a regular basis. I signed a petition in the Spar lastnight, seems like everyone in the local community is completely united on this one, which can only be a good thing in the worse cased scenario when these plans get the go ahead. Any idea whos petition it was? There seems to be a lot going on with petitions and the like. There's us, the Gazette have one, this one in the Spar and the young lad who was mentioned in the paper. There may even be more going on that we don't know about. I've had a quick word with Mark and we're looking at setting up some sort of dedicated website to try and bring all these campaigns and petitions together. I think that armed with one big petition full of signatures we can all make a larger impression than a few dribs and drabs here and there brought in by a load of people. What does everyone think?

I am a sad old git who has been away from the town for some 20 years but I still stay in touch with what is happening via Fife News. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first read this story. I had the privelege of being selected from my class at primary school to attend the official opening. I had no idea who Manny Shinwell was and had to ask my old man to explain who he was and why he was so imported.
I learned to swim at the Institute, I played 5s there and also trained there in the Winters with the cricket club. This is a complete nonsense and flys in the face of the Scottish Executive's aims of a healthier fitter Scotland. Who are all these numpties on the Council?
I have signed the online petition and will keep an eye on this forum to see if there is anything else set up which I can support

It's not real badminton... we hit the shuttle as hard as we can and try and hit each other with it. A REAL man's sport.

Well I just got back from my weekly swim and the insty was HEAVING with people, so much so I had to park at the BACK of the college. How can they close it when it is so well used? It just doesn't make sense. Although I think they are trying to freeze everyone out of the pool.

Just read the Fife Free Press and it throws a hint at the existing grounds of the institute for the new complex

There's a public meeting being held on Monday March the 27th at the Rothes Halls in Glenrothes at 7.30pm. Its everyone's chance to turn up to show their support and to give Fife Council 'what for' on this one!

I'll do my best to go along to that meeting and listen to what they're saying. After reading those recent articles on the fifetoday site, I can't help thinking that between the lines they're already admitting that any new facility will be going to Kirkcaldy. If you're only building one facility to replace two, then surely you're going to put it where the greater population is?
It pisses me off that Glenrothes might be left with nothing at all in the way of public health & leisure facilities, and that anybody who would want access to a new facility would have to leave town and travel to get to it. Great idea to have a shiny new facility, but not so good if it means Glenrothes is denied yet another facility, ultimately lowering the attractiveness of the town to anyone considering moving here. Doesnt take an economic genius to realise that to attract the skills that attract businesses and prosperity to a town, you have to provide a town that the people with those skills can enjoy living in. Just looks like a Kirkcaldy facility will result in further degrading of Glenrothes to me.
Also - it irritates me when Mr. Grimmond says that the institute isn't cost effective. Maybe on an individual P&L, Mr. Grimmond, aye, but you're not factoring in the potential social costs to the town of losing FIPRE. The macro-economic P&L for all of Glenrothes. That's what you want to be looking at. Cost effective? Is he looking for a profit? Show me a public facility that makes a profit? I think he should re-think his priorities and take a look at the bigger picture. I'm off to punch a pillow! Mark.
