Here's an extract from John McDougal's Parliamentary Report for March:-
Fife Institute Due to Parliamentary business I was unable to attend the public meeting in the Rothes Halls on 27th March. I was pleased that the following statement was read out at the meeting: ‘As someone who used Fife Institute regularly when I worked in Glenrothes as Leader of Fife Council I know how much these facilities mean to my constituents.
I can confirm that following a meeting with Mr Steve Grimmond, Head of Community Services, I am satisfied that at the very least the swimming, sports and leisure facilities provided by Fife Institute will be modernised and retained.
I have also spoken with Anne McGovern, Leader of Fife Council, and have made it quite clear that I do not believe that the ‘super site’ solution that has been discussed in the media is appropriate for an area such as Fife. Whilst a giant complex might suit a city, it cannot be appropriate for Fife where we have 3 major centres of population, each of which needs its own easily accessible facilities. It makes no sense in these environmentally-conscious times to have people travelling by road from all over Fife to one centre.
In closing I would also like to say that I have absolutely no problem with badly needed sports and leisure facilities being developed in Kirkcaldy. However, I am sure that these will not be developed at the expense of our facilities here in Glenrothes.’

Sounds good but it is still a bit vague.
When is this going to happen? What do they mean "at the very least the swimming, sports and leisure facilities provided by Fife Institute will be modernised and retained." Very least? And how can they suddenly afford to do this?
Apart from that I'm happy!

here's an interesting wee article from the Herald about a new lease of life for new towns. "there are still qualities of twentieth century towns worth retaining and they're worth re-fitting to make them more based around today's needs". www.theherald.co.uk/features/59393.html

Cheers for that. I can use that in my dissertation now.

It seems like things are going to be hotting up again soon. Week commencing the 19th of June, Fife Council are rolling out their "Consultation" - the wording/detail of which should be VERY interesting! Also I heard that two FIPRE sports instructors have been 'eased' into taking early retirement (allegedly) and that they will not be replaced (allegedly). If that's true its just another way for Fife Council decision makers to undermine the quality provision and reputation of FIPRE. Recent "news" type reports around the net (e.g. see town centre posts on this forum) would suggest that FC continue unabated with their "plans". They still seem to be seeing all the trouble over the Insty as a temporary blip in their otherwise complete domination of what's supposed to be a participatory democracy! Anyhow, get of my soap box - fact is they are still treating the people of Glenrothes with indifference and contempt - BIG mistake!. With elections looming you'd think they (or at least the related politicians) would be wiser than that.....
Watch this space - more fun and games and renewed grief for FC from Glenrothes residents is on the way methinks!

Yesterday we had Lib Dems campaigning at our door and they said there was a rumour that the Insty was going to be saved. Then on Kingdom FM news this morning I heard it was true. ;D They're going to "upgrade" the original building, whatever that may entail. But it looks like we won.

Yes, it seems like great news and a shot in the arm for people power. It shows what can be achieved when people rally together and speak with one voice. Huge credit to Rob Lambert and his squad of first class activists who've grafted away and got the job done! Im sure Rob would be the first to caution the we all need to keep our eye on the ball though, there are many ways to defure community cohesion and focus and it would be criminal if these new plans were allowed to falter and Fife Council get off the hook.

Whats going on at the insty?
There is some scaffolding up at the front, maybe they are taking those tiles off before they fall off or maybe they are doing some much needed upgrading?
I must admit I've not been there for a good 6 months now and probably wont go back until they remove the neds and heat the pool.
