Yeah I was watching them last week. I thought they were just having a laugh... probably confiscated them from someone.

Vroooooooommmmmmmmmmmm
I think these are awesome. They're used all over the world so why not here? They've been in the U.S for years, in airports, shopping malls, warehouses, etc..
If you speak to the security/police that use them, they give you a better idea of what they're for.
The Kingdom Centre Manager has bought one for use by the Security Guards and Police officers that work in the centre. It does not belong to the Police. He has bought it out his own pocket.
It is mainly to raise the publics awareness of security in the centre. The Police/Security are seen better on it and can also see above busy crowds and to the back of busy shops from standing outside the shop on it. Also, it breaks the barrier between the public, allowing the police to be more approachable and thus engaging in conversation.
The Segway has the capability of going as fast as running, which will aid in getting to an emergency quicker, however, public safety is priority and it will only be used fast if it is absolutely safe to do so. You can see this thing coming a mile away so you move for it anyway.
Also, if the user needs to get off and leave it, there is an electronic key that they take off it and this activates an alarm which locks the wheels and if someone tries to move it, an alarm sounds and the thing shakes and because the wheels lock, unless you can lift 8 stone easily, the Segway aint going anywhere. Plus with CCTV and security looking after it, there's no chance it'll get nicked.
If only the DVLA or whoever makes the law for roads could let you use these on paths, I'd be asking Santa for one.
