THE HEART of Glenrothes could be about to change forever as Fife Councillors approved radical changes to the town centre at a meeting of Fife Council's Glenrothes Area Committee.
The move underlines the council's commitment to bringing new investment to Fife as plans to transform key areas of Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy also continue to move forward.
Today's decision it's hoped will turn Glenrothes into a top shopping destination and according to Committee Chair Councillor Fiona Grant, will be welcomed by local people.
In total three planning applications were considered at today's committee - two applying for permission to develop new retail outlets and parking in the town and the other applying for outline planning permission to redevelop part of the existing Kingdom Centre.
In approving all three applications the committee has now given developers the green light to take the next steps in moving forward with their plans. CIS and Sainsburys Supermarkets have submitted ambitious proposals for a new 65,000 square foot superstore and public civic square as well as seven new retail units and a new multi-storey car park.
Two further retail units would be redeveloped as part of the plans and the existing YMCA, CISWO Club and Bowling Club buildings would be demolished to make way for the new superstore.
CIS Ltd's outline proposals involve demolishing part of the existing Kingdom Centre including the former vacant Co-op department store. In its place it's proposed to build a 60,000 square foot development - 40,000 square feet of which would be retail and 20,000 square feet would be used for leisure purposes.
