only if they're FIPRE branded. I could sew my Scottish Swimmer badge on them! And the 3km badge I got. (although I only managed about 2.5km in reality, but there was another class due in so they told me to get out and gave me the badge anyway!) thanks FIPRE!

Muddy Face could write a song about saving the insty then setup a stage outside Fife House and sing it with all of you wearing Speedos. Argh what a thought! I scare myself sometimes. Although you could make it you're only allowed along if you are wearing speedos or bikinis for the girls!!

Hi, ive been emailed by one of the people chairing the FIPRE meeting on the 27th. Hes asking if there are any famous Glenrothes people or anyone who would carry any weight in the campaign to save the FIPRE? I suggested Dougray Scott, or even writting to Princess Anne who opened the Insty? Or even sports enthusiasts in the town?
I also suggested getting the media on board such as the Scottish news, the more people know about this the better.
Do u guys have any other suggestions?

I was thinking that it's worth holding back a little until the working group Public meeting and the Adult Services Committe have met (the working group will be in the gallery). Then everyone can take stock, based on the latest mantra and think about what's needed for the next phase of the campaign. Maybe just keep everything new (like Celebs etc) until then, its only a fortnight? I think the campaign has beena HUGE success and we need to maybe just hold off for a wee bit to see what FC are planning/suggesting now because they have been under some heat on this one! Whot d'you guys think? Wait and see how they want to respond? They do have a great opprtunity to win people over in the next two weeks by making a clear, unambiguous commitment to the future of FIPRE - question is, will they take it?!
PS I'm an old friend of Dougray's mum! That's my only claim to fame!

Looks like this meeting on the 27th will be quite big, I got a flyer through my door about it yesterday.
Who's all going then? I've got a bloody presentation to give at work but I'm going to try and get it done as quick as I can and get along to it.

Here guys Ive been thinking alot about this issue. This is just an idea off the top of my head, but would it not be in the best interests of the town and the institute if it was located in a place served with good public transport links? ie closer to the town centre...
Wouldnt it be better for the institute to be moved to either Riverside Park, or Warout Park? Warout is halfway between its existing site and the town centre and has better bus routes passing by it, plus it has the football stadium already next to it? It could be turned into a sports hub?
Riverside Park is in the heart of the town and has bus connections passing by it frequently, plus its right next to the town centre, making it easier to access.
How much space in both these places is being well used for sports at present anyway? (with the exception of Warout on a Saturday/Sunday with all the football training).
Call me crazy but are we so determined to have the existing facility retained (which isnt a pretty building anyway) or a similar facility built on its existing site thats its blinding us from seeing a better alternative...?
I dont want to see the institute moved from Glenrothes at all, and I have many fond memories of going there from my childhood, but could it not be better located within the town so that if u dont have a car, its still pretty easy to get to?

I know what you mean, but I don't think they'd move it to Warout or Riverside. It's the principle of it being in Glenrothes that's the important thing. If they said they were going to build a better facility in a better location within Glenrothes and close the current one, I don't think there'd be as much resistance.

I was at the meeting and the main points put across by Mr Grimmond were that if they were to build this so called 'super sports centre' (incorporating the Fife Institute, Kirkcaldy Pool and the Carnegie centre) there would still be local centres of some sort. He did not say just how big or small these places would be. He would not let on exactly what is going to happen and to his credit that probably has not been decided yet. Some figures that were mentioned were that to restore the Institute to something good would cost around £8m but yet to build a replacement would cost £10m. He also stated that this "new" institute may very well be in Glenrothes but not on the current site. However, it does appear that Fife Council has run the Institute into the ground with a lack of funding. This whole close the institute fiasco was originally dreampt up in 2001 and since then the funding the Institute has received has dropped considerably. From 2002 - 2005 around £350,000 was spent on the upkeep whereas in 2001 alone £350,000 was spent and a similar amount in previos years.

Apparently the meeting went quite well (according to the Gazette today). 400 attended (biggest turnout in many, many years). We'll have to see how the Adult Services meeting goes on Friday. 10,000 petition signatures too! Call me cynical but I dont think Mr Grimmond's personal/priate stance has changed one bit, just that he's been reluctantly forced to modify his public mantra for the time being. I think we'll all have to keep the pressure on - I can just imagine the Fife Council 'loaded' consultation process! One everyone has taken stock, I'm sure the working group will get a meduim term strategy in place. So far as I can see, all that's really changed is the timescale; they have been forced to back of and pursue another route for their plans. I think we'll have to see what the Adult Services Committee have to say on Friday....but don't they always just rubber stamp what the "experts" recommend? Do they ever really question the basis of what they're told, or more to the point, what they haven't been told?

I was just reading the article in the gazette concerning the 8 million to repair vs 10 million to build a new facility and wondered if anybody has actually seen a breakdown of what these figures involve, or if it's even been made publicly available? anybody?
